Fiber-integrated Technology for Alkali Vapor Cells

Our broad research in the field of atomic physics – not only to gain fundamental knowledge, but also to aim for technological advances such as a single photon source or a high performance gas sensor – requires a versatile apparatus of equipment and technology. One aspect of such technology is to master the production and development of glass-based vapor cells in all shapes and sizes.

Scientists and engineers from the 5th Physical Institute and the Institut für Strahlwerkzeuge (IFSW) recently have found a way to insert optical fibers into atomic vapor cells [1]. The joint project of the two institutes pushed things even further: Instead of having a 'traditional' cell, they used a hollow segment of the optical fiber directly as the vapor cell [2].
